About

Our Story

Saints’ Rest Missionary Baptist Church was organized on July 24, 1972, by Pastor Seymour Metters and 280 founding members.

Our first worship service was held on August 6, 1972, at Thompson’s Funeral Chapel in Oakland, California. As our congregation grew, God blessed us with permanent property and opportunities for expansion, laying the foundation for decades of ministry and community impact.

Following Pastor Metters’ passing in 1978, Pastor James E. Lawson Sr. was called to lead Saints’ Rest in 1979. Under his leadership, the church experienced continued growth and, in 1983, moved into our current church home at 1401 57th Avenue in Oakland, built from the ground up.

Throughout our history, Saints’ Rest has experienced seasons of growth, challenge, renewal, and restoration, but through every season, God has remained faithful.

Growth & Resilience

In 2016, Pastor James E. Lawson Jr. was officially elected Pastor after faithfully serving during a critical season of transition and restoration. Under his leadership, Saints’ Rest has continued to grow spiritually, expand ministries, and strengthen outreach to our community.

Today, we remain committed to our legacy: being a church known for being warm, welcoming, Spirit-filled, and centered on Jesus Christ.
